The Best Melbourne Cup Celebrations in Perth
These parties are the closest thing to a sure thing for the race that stops the nation.
You don’t have to be a racing enthusiast to be drawn in by the frivolity that surrounds the Melbourne Cup – it is an imperative event in the social and sporting fabric of Australia. As per 150-year-old tradition, the first Tuesday in November sees the ‘race that stops the nation’ return; not without cohorts of fashionistas, an air of exhilaration and glass upon glass of bubbly.
Not everyone is so fortunate to be at Flemington for the race, but there is no shortage of great local events to catch all the action from. If you reside in the west, these are some of the best Melbourne Cup celebrations on offer.
In its inaugural year, Tipple is set to shake up the spring racing experience in the west. As the first WA event to make something of both Derby Day and the Melbourne Cup, Tipple kicks off the Perth racing season in spectacular fashion.
Touted as a luxurious garden party – akin to that of Flemington itself – the Subiaco site will be home to no less than six lavishly furnished marquees, gardens and terraces, across two action packed days. Races from both Flemington and Ascot will be broadcast around the site on both days; and the parade ring will come to life with fashions from some of Perth’s best retailers. The party will continue into the night, with Client Liaison set to headline the GH Mumm after party on Derby Day, and Bag Raiders on cup day.
General admission to the Silks Lawn, eat street and the 50m octagonal bar starts from $99 per person, per day.
Entry to the private Barbagallo Johnnie Walker Blue Marquee is strictly by invite only. But, for a similar VIP experience you can buy a $495 ticket to The Garden, The Hedges, The Village or The Bumble Hive. The ticket gives you access to your own private marquee, a fully catered, sit-down lunch, and drinks by Johnnie Walker, Pimms, Mumm and Tanqueray. VIP guests also have exclusive access to the Linda Farrow pamper room.
Classique at Crown Ballroom
The prize pool alone is reason enough to book your ticket for Crown Perth’s 2017 Classique Melbourne Cup celebration ($250 per person). With 2 business class Emirates airfares, an 8-day Mekong River cruise in Vietnam and a $10,000 Paspaley Pearls voucher up for grabs on the door, a win would put the cherry on the cake of a day of indulgence at Crown.
Held in the newly refurbished ballroom, the cup festivities kick off at 10.00am with live music and free flowing Piper-Heidsieck champagne; before a 4-course lunch of milk poached scallops, tomato, olive and pistachio crumbed lamb, spring chicken and deconstructed cheesecake is served. STM is hosting a fashions on the field competition, and a runway spectacular featuring the likes of Alice McCall, Zimmerman, Camilla and more, completes the essential fashion component of the day.
The festivities will be kept alive post 3.00pm at after parties at The Waiting Room, La Vie and The Merrywell. DJ sets and drink specials will run across the venues late into the night.
Perth’s ever-growing skyline is the perfect backdrop for Suited’s open-air Melbourne Cup celebrations. Held on the South Perth Foreshore, the all-day event is one that has become synonymous with race day in Perth.
Renowned for its focus on fashion, the latest event from Suited won’t disappoint. A huge 20m runway will be graced by the likes of Ae’lkemi, Sofia the Label and Suited For Him; and live Fashions on The Field crosses will be broadcast throughout the day. The day’s entertainment isn’t left there, with local bands playing up until dusk, and an R&B DJ taking to the decks after dark.
General admission to The Precinct is $75.00, and grants you access to the Suited bars and food vendors, from where you can purchase a variety of food and drink. The Grey Goose VIP experience is $185.00 per person, and entitles the ticket holder to 5 complimentary drinks, all-day canapes, and access to the private bars, bathrooms and lounges.
Melbourne Cup at Mandoon
If being in the thick of the party scene on race day isn’t your thing, you can escape and celebrate from the secluded, picturesque grounds at Mandoon Estate; a 25-minute drive from the CBD, in the Swan Valley.
On arrival at the vineyard, guests will be greeted with a glass of Mandoon’s own sparkling wine, freshly shucked oysters and canapes. At midday, the festivities move indoors to the ballroom, where the race will be screened, and a 3-course lunch served. Drink package ticket holders ($139.00/ticket) can enjoy free flowing Mandoon wines and Homestead brews, or you can opt to pay-as-you-go at the cash bar ($99/ticket). Espresso martinis and Pimms are also on the menu at the dedicated cocktail bar, and will set you back $15 a drink.
If an after party is on the cards, a shuttle bus will be departing Mandoon for Crown at just $10 a ticket.
