‘A Lavish Oasis In Lower East Side Madness’: Inside NYC’s PUBLIC Hotel
New York City isn’t short on places to stay. From trendy boutiques to beautiful classics, where you stay in the Big Apple is a first indicator of the type of trip you’re set to have.
And the locals will tell you, there’s no trendier place to stay than the city’s bustling Lower East Side. Though packed with bars, restaurants, and more nightlife per square metre than any other neighbourhood in the city, finding an oasis within the madness is key.
Thankfully, longstanding hotelier Ian Schrager has created magic yet again with his latest PUBLIC Hotel, located at 215 Chrystie Street.
Dubbed the creator of the ‘boutique hotel’ concept, Schrager is no stranger to fun in the city. Best-known for his Studio 54 success back in the late 1970s, his latest brainchild, set right in the heart of the Bowery, comes designed by Herzog de Meuron and is said to be a response to the growing competition from Airbnb.
PUBLIC boasts 367 rooms in 11 different options, each decked out with a plethora of amenities. For a casual one-night stay to a weeklong séjour of arts, fine-dining, and late-night dancing, the hotel provides the ultimate NYC getaway without ever having to leave.
Of PUBLIC’s 367 rooms, there’s a bed, layout, and view for everyone. Guests looking to simply relax can choose a basic Queen or Queen Hi-Floor room, located on floors 3-8 and 9-11.
For those seeking a skyline view, King Great View and Double Park View rooms provide sun-drenched sights over the neighbourhood’s leafy treetops. Loft rooms are also available in the above options, and for lavish Penthouse seekers, there are three of those as well.
All rooms come equipped with hi-speed wireless internet, flat-screen Apple TVs, touch-controlled blackout shades, Bluetooth speakers and in-room steamers.
A 24-hour gym with headphones and towels to use is also available to all guests. Light snacks and drinks are available to all guests from 6am until 5pm in the hotel lobby, followed by complimentary warm cookies and milk from 8pm until midnight.
Bicycles with locks and helmets are also available to use, free of charge.
The rooftop bar
PUBLIC’s The Roof provides breathtaking 360-degree views of the city via floor-to-ceiling windows, complete with an outdoor terrace space, perfect for imbibing amongst friends and fellow guests.
As the sun begins to set, savour a cocktail as the DJ du jour prepares their evening set. Experience firsthand how this happy hour hotspot turns into a sexy, sophisticated lounge atmosphere, set against the famous city skyline.
PUBLIC’s restaurant is operated by world-renowned chef, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, who brings a sophisticated and seasonal menu to the heart of the hotel. Inspired by global travels, Chef Jean-Georges’ menu focuses on grass-fed meats, sustainable seafood, and an array of organic market produce.
A large portion of the menu is prepared in the on-site wood-burning oven and grill, in a variety of curated specialities for all dietary restrictions, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free.
For smaller-scale bites, head to Diego, PUBLIC’s intimate hotel bar. Known for their top-notch cocktails prepared by internationally known mixologists, the bar’s sensational beverages are made to pair with Jean-Georges’ original menu items. Post up by the fireplace and simply indulge.
For quick bites on the go, Louis is PUBLIC’s answer. This coffee shop-grocery-luncheonette hybrid is located on the ground floor of the hotel, offering organic hand-prepared items that are both casual and affordable. Perfect for grabbing and go-ing on the way to explore the neighbourhood.
The co-working space
Working on the road is generally a must and Schrager has tapped in on that. PUBLIC’s Lobby Bar is the perfect place to labor and socialise all at once, dubbed by the establishment as the ‘hotel’s heartbeat and social hub’.
Benefit from an abundance of easy-access power outlets and hi-speed internet. Grab a coffee and set up a meeting or simply post up on WiFi and work hard – to play harder later, of course.
The gallery space
Inspired by Schrager’s Studio 54 past, PUBLIC ARTS is a progressive multimedia space set in the heart of the hotel, attracting both locals and tourists alike. This dynamic space within the hotel features an array of art displays, from film screenings to travelling art exhibitions to live musical performances.
Comedy shows, late-night dancing, and early-morning partying are also in no short supply. Don’t miss a stop by this progressive new-wave space, open Wednesday through Saturday from 11pn until 4am.
A full list of weekly events can be found on the PUBLIC LIFE Calendar. Adventure awaits, just a few floors away.
